Midjourney vs Ideogram

Checked October 25, 2026

Checked October 25, 2026. Midjourney's figures are from the Comparing Midjourney Plans page. Ideogram's dollar amounts are from ideogram.ai/pricing. The free credit count is from Ideogram's plans doc, which says 30 a week. The pricing FAQ says that weekly amount may vary. Canva is quoted from its listing, last checked October 17, 2026, and that listing does not quote a Pro price.

A free test, and a paid hour

Ideogram Free is $0. The plans doc says a sign-in with Google, Apple, or Microsoft gets 30 credits a week. An account created with email and a password gets none. Free images are public. Plus is $20/month, or $15/month billed annually ($180/year), for 2,400 priority credits a month. Pro is $60/month, or $42/month billed annually ($504/year), for 7,500. Prices exclude tax. Unused monthly priority credits do not roll over. After those credits, Plus and Pro can keep generating Ideogram models in a slower queue. Pay as you go is 1¢ a credit. There is no free trial of a paid plan.

Midjourney lists four subscriptions and no free tier. Basic is $10/month, or $96/year ($8/month), for 3.3 hours of Fast GPU time. Standard is $30/month, or $288/year ($24/month), for 15 hours and unlimited Relax images. Pro is $60/month, or $576/year ($48/month), for 30 hours, unlimited Relax images and SD video, and Stealth Mode. Mega is $120/month, or $1,152/year ($96/month), for 60 hours. Extra Fast time is $4/hour. A company making more than $1,000,000 in gross revenue a year needs Pro or Mega. You are buying GPU time, not a count of thumbnails.

The word in the picture

Ideogram is the one to open when a short word has to be painted into the still. Long phrases and small type still break. Plus and Pro can keep a generation unpublished. Free cannot.

Midjourney is the stylized still. Readable text inside that image is still a gamble. Stealth Mode, which keeps the image private, starts on Pro. Set the episode title in type, in Canva or another layout tool. Canva's listing does not quote a Pro price. The Best AI tools for YouTube thumbnails page is the wider shelf, including Leonardo.

Which thumbnail should open which app

A first prompt, and the image can be public: Ideogram Free, with a Google, Apple, or Microsoft sign-in. If the word is the concept, stay there. Plus at $20, or $15 billed annually, is the first plan that can keep the image unpublished.

A look you already know you will pay for, and the title will be set somewhere else: Midjourney Standard, if you want unlimited Relax images, or Basic if 3.3 Fast hours is enough for the month. The Thumbnail and image generation list has the other stills.

Questions

Does either tool have a free plan?

Ideogram does. The plans doc says 30 credits a week for a Google, Apple, or Microsoft sign-in, and none for an email-and-password account. The pricing FAQ says the weekly amount may vary. Free images are public. Midjourney's plan comparison lists Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega. It does not list a free tier.

Which one puts a word in the thumbnail?

Ideogram. A short word is the reason to try it. A sentence, or small type, still belongs in a layout tool. Midjourney is the wrong place for text that has to be spelled right.

What does a Midjourney plan actually meter?

Fast GPU hours. Basic includes 3.3 hours a month. Standard includes 15, Pro 30, and Mega 60. Standard and above add unlimited Relax images. Extra Fast time is $4 an hour. A plan name is not a number of thumbnails.
