Descript vs Riverside

Checked October 18, 2026

Checked October 18, 2026. Descript's figures are from descript.com/pricing. Riverside's dollar amounts are from the FAQ on riverside.com/pricing. That page still shows a staging notice, so Riverside's prices stay approximate.

Start from the file you already have

Descript is a transcript editor. You record or import, then cut by deleting words. Filler removal, Studio Sound, captions, and a rough clip pass sit in the same project. Riverside is a remote studio. Each guest records a local track in the browser, and the editor, the clips, and the host come after that recording.

An interview with a guest on another connection is Riverside's job. A solo episode, a screen recording, or a file you already exported is Descript's job. Plenty of shows record in one and finish in the other.

What the plans actually meter

Descript Free is 1 media hour a month, watermarked 720p export, and 2 hours of recording. Hobbyist is $16/month billed annually ($24 month-to-month) with 10 media hours and 5 recording hours a month. Creator is $24/month annually ($35 monthly) with 30 media hours, 15 recording hours a month, and 4K export. Media hours count files you import or record. AI credits are a second meter, for Studio Sound, filler removal, and generated media.

Riverside Free is $0: a one-time 2 hours of separate-track recording, a watermark, 720p, and 44.1 kHz audio. The pricing FAQ lists Pro at $29/month or $24/month billed annually ($288 a year), with 15 hours of separate-track downloads, up to 4K, and 48 kHz. Grow is listed at $39/month or $34/month billed annually ($408), and that is the plan that adds live streaming. The page still carries a staging banner, so confirm the card before you pay. Recording itself is unlimited on Riverside. The cap that matters is downloading the separate local tracks.

Hosting, clips, and the second app

Riverside's paid plans include podcast hosting and publishing out to the directories. Descript publishes a page and a player from the project. If the RSS feed already lives at a host you like, Descript does not ask you to move it. If you want the recorder and the host on one bill, Riverside is the one that says hosting is included.

Both will take a first pass at silences, fillers, and clips. A narrative episode with music hits and scenes still wants a timeline after either of them. The Podcast editing list has the other editors, including Gling when the only job is cutting pauses out of a talking-head video.

Questions

Can Descript replace Riverside for a remote interview?

Descript records, with 2 hours on the free plan and more on paid plans. Riverside's reason to exist is the separate local track from each guest's computer, so a bad connection does not become the master. Use Riverside when the guest is remote and the local file is the point. Use Descript when you already have the files and the work is the cut.

Which free plan can finish a short episode?

Descript Free can edit about one media hour and export a watermarked 720p file. Riverside Free can try 2 hours of separate-track recording once, also watermarked. Neither free plan is a weekly show. Hobbyist on Descript or Pro on Riverside is the first plan that covers a regular episode.

Why is Riverside's price marked approximate?

On October 18, 2026, riverside.com/pricing still showed a staging notice above the plans. The FAQ on that page lists Pro at $29/month or $24/month annually and Grow at $39/month or $34/month annually. Treat those figures as the FAQ's figures until the banner is gone.
